WOMAD 2012 takes place at New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park from 16-18 March showcasing artists from around the world.

Since the highly successful initial event in 2003, the festival has continued to go from strength to strength and this year’s line-up is sure not to disappoint with music and performances from all 15 countries as well as a strong New Zealand flavour.

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of WOMAD international, so it is particularly fitting that one of the inspirations behind the very first WOMAD festival is part of the line-up. The truly spectacular Master Drummers of Burundi, who inspired the first WOMAD festival in 1982, will delight audiences here at WOMAD NZ 2012.

The essence of WOMAD is the discovery and enjoyment of a totally unexpected artist or a style of music never encountered before. WOMAD 2012 delivers a fantastic line up with a particularly strong African contingent including an amazing story of triumph over hardship – Staff Benda Bilili. For the full line up see the WOMAD website. The Nova Energy Taste the World stage which provides live cooking demonstrations, will be hosted this year by Masterchef runner up, Jax Hamilton.

At the heart of the festival is the Global Village. Made up of more than 80 stalls trading a vast range of international foods, beverages, and arts and crafts it is a pivotal part of WOMAD. There are also opportunities to discover more about the performers and their music through the Artists Conversation and Performers Workshops. The Kidszone provides programmes to keep the young ones entertained and brings out their creative side. WOMAD is known for its family-friendly atmosphere.
