Other than keeping your device turned off while overseas, the safest way to avoid roaming charges is to keep your phone in ‘flight mode’. Also known as ‘Aeroplane Mode’, this feature disables all mobile network connectivity to prevent calls, texts and any data usage from installed apps.

You can also enable WiFi Calling and connect to a free WiFi network (while still in flight mode). This will let you to make and receive calls and texts to New Zealand and Aussie numbers without incurring roaming charges.

Calls to any other destination (including the country you’re in) will be charged at our Standard Mobile Rates.

If you want to make sure your device does not consume data while you’re overseas (actively or via background apps), you can specifically turn off Data Roaming in your device settings.

• On an iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Data Roaming
• For Samsung:  Check Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming

First of all, make sure WiFi Calling is enabled on your phone and then connect to a free WiFi network. It’s a good idea to do this while still in flight mode to ensure your phone doesn’t auto-connect to an overseas network.

To make a call, you need to replace the ‘0’ at the start of the number you want to dial with a ‘+’ and the International Calling Code. This applies even if you’re calling someone within the destination you’re in. For example, to call an Australian number you would drop the first ‘0’ and replace it with +61. Every country has its own International Calling Code which you can find on countrycode.org.

Please note, any overseas short-codes, freephone or premium numbers will not work when you have WiFi Calling enabled.

To help you avoid unintended roaming costs, Voicemail is turned off by default while you’re roaming overseas.

However, if you do need Voicemail, you have two options below. Please be aware that using Voicemail while overseas will likely incur roaming charges.

1. Set up Call Forwarding on your device to +64266820002. All incoming calls will then be automatically diverted to Voicemail at no charge.
2. Set up Conditional Call Forwarding so that Voicemail works like it does in New Zealand.

• Dial *004*266820002**30# from your phone to activate.
• Dial ##004# to cancel.

You can retrieve your messages while overseas by calling +64266820001 and entering your Voicemail PIN. Roaming charges apply.

Important: Unanswered inbound calls that go to your Voicemail while using Conditional Call Forwarding also incur roaming charges. You will be charged for the inbound call to your phone, then also charged for the redirected call through to your Voicemail.  If you then choose to listen to your messages, roaming charges also apply for the call back to the New Zealand based Voicemail service.

AT&T is our roaming carrier in the United States and they use 4G/5G networks. 2G/3G is no longer supported. To make and receive voice calls while roaming in the USA, you’ll need to have:

• a VoLTE capable device
• VoLTE enabled in your phone settings 
• Data Roaming turned on
• A device that supports AT&T’s 4G/5G frequencies.

VoLTE stands for Voice over Long Term Evolution and it allows you to make high-definition (HD) calls over a 4G network. Simply put, when you make a voice call using VoLTE, you connect quicker and enjoy a clearer connection with reduced background noise.

IMPORTANT: By having these settings enabled, you will likely incur daily roaming charges because VoLTE requires data use. If you want to avoid all roaming charges, keep your device in flight mode while you’re away. This means you will not be able to use data, calls or SMS. However, you can use a local WiFi connection while in flight mode to access data and make the most of free WiFi Calling to New Zealand and Australia.

You’ll also need a mobile device that supports the required frequencies. The AT&T 4G network is composed of the following bands:

• 700 MHz: Bands 12/17/29
• 850 MHz: Band 5
• 1900 MHz: Band 2
• 1700 MHz & 2100 MHz: Bands 4/66
• 2300 MHz: Band 30

AT&T’s mid-band 5G+ network requires a device that supports band n77 C-Band or n77 3.45 GHz. High-band 5G+ is available in airports, stadiums, and venues using band n260.

• Data Roaming turned on.
